In serious complaints about a train accident on Tempe Kostas Genidunias, president of OSE machinists, continued by saying that neither traffic lights, nor signs, nor traffic control work on the Athens-Thessaloniki route.
“Nothing works. Everything is done with the human factor, manually. All the way from Athens to Thessaloniki, we are in manual mode,” Mr. Genidunias complained to ERT.
And he added: “Neither the indicators work, nor the traffic lights, nor the traffic control. If it had worked, the drivers would have seen the red signal and the trains would have stopped within 500 meters of each other.”
The President of the OGE of machinists emphasized that the situation with non-working systems is happening “for the last time” and workers have repeatedly protested about this.
He clarified that there was a double line at the site of the tragedy, and he could not understand why the two trains ended up on the same line.
“If work is going on somewhere, then there are branches that direct trains. Here the line is double, and two trains have been found on the same line. One was falling and the other was rising,” said a shocked Mr. Genidunias.
Russian Railways President: This is a mistake
For its part, its president Panhellenic Federation of Railways, Yiannis Dytsasleft spikes in ERT due to human error.
“Oddly enough, this is a mistake. Something was done that will be investigated by the authorities, but a mistake was made. Each train leaves the station under the responsibility of the station master,” he said, adding that he could not know if the mistake was made on the ground or on the train.
Answering the question why the locksmith testifies to the authorities together with the head of the station, Mr. Ditzas said that the orders are given by the station management, and the necessary changes are made to the electrical part.
Finally, as to the circumstances of the accident, he stated that the train driver could not know if another train was on the same route, specifying that the driver was following orders and any conversations with the stationmaster were being recorded.
