
rare diseases have a number of features – either in terms of treatment or in their statistics: a rare disease affects a very small number of people (1:2000 people), however, according to recent studies, 5% of the world’s population suffers from a rare disease (300 million worldwide).
OUR Dimitris Athanasiou, President of the Association of Rare Patients of Greece (ESAE) is a noble and eloquent man. He sits across from me on his midday break 3rd International Conference -takes place in Technopolis-on occasion World Rare Disease Day.
OUR 28th of February it is a day of their own fame, and in the first half of the conference, the speakers focus on the Greek reality, “strive to improve the lives of our patients,” as Mr. Athanasiou notes.
He expresses the hope that there will be cures, since “for 95% people don’t exist” and adds that 50% of patients are childrenof which 35% is lost by age 5.
