Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has shared a photo that he says purports to depict an elf-like creature from Mayan mythology in nature, The Guardian reports.
López Obrador wrote on his Twitter page that the photo “was taken three days ago by an engineer, it seems to be alux”. “It’s all a mystery,” he added.
Les compartos dos fotos de nuestra supervizione a las obras del Tren Maya: one, taken by ingeniero hace three días, al parecer de un luxe. the other, Diego Prieto with a fine pre-Hispanic sculpture at Ek Balam. Everything is mystical. pic.twitter.com/Tr5OP2EqmU

According to traditional Mayan beliefs, alukas are small spirits that live in forests and fields and are feared for the parties they throw to people. According to these traditions, spirits are usually invisible, but can take physical form to communicate with or frighten people.
They are usually represented as miniature people dressed in traditional Mayan clothing.
Some Mexicans leave them small offerings to improve them, believing that the Alukas can help grow crops, bring rain, and deter predators or thieves.
The Guardian reminds that this is not the first time that the president of Mexico has publicly expressed his belief in the existence of creatures from local folklore.
