It is unlikely that Ukraine will open a second front in Transnistria, Belarusian President Oleksandr Lukashenko said on Saturday at the “Raubichi” sports complex, the BelTA agency reports.
After the media reported on the possible provocation, Lukashenka was asked if he really believed that Ukraine would open a second front: “I don’t think so. It is simply not profitable for them. The West wants to solve the problem with Russia and close this gray hole, as they say, and unite Moldova, squeeze it into Romania or make it pro-Western. This is their goal. Ukrainians do not need it. I don’t think Ukrainians will go crazy and open a second front.”
At the same time, Russian troops and ammunition are present in Transnistria. Thus, it will be very difficult to give an answer, the Belarusian president noted.
Oleksandr Lukashenko believes that the West is using the situation in Transnistria to destabilize the situation in the region: “Everything must be undermined. This is in the interests of the West. I don’t think Ukrainians need it. If they open the second one up front, it’s going to be a bit deadly.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow on Friday sent a statement regarding Transnistria, in which it says that Ukraine will prepare a “military challenge” there and warns the United States, NATO member states and Ukraine “not to take adventurous steps yet.” considering that any threat to the security of Russian soldiers and ammunition in the separatist territory of the Republic of Moldova will be considered an “attack on the Russian Federation”, and its armed forces will give an “adequate response”.
The statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Moscow intervenes after Russia has for several days spread the idea that Ukraine is preparing a provocation in Transnistria, although Chisinau rejected this scenario and said that there is no information on this matter, urging the population to remain calm.
