Many ethnic Hungarians from Ukraine who were conscripted into the Ukrainian army died at the front, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said in an interview on Saturday with the American channel CNN, which was carried by the Hungarian news agency MTI, so he again insisted that Hungary stands for peaceful negotiations that will lead to the end of this war started by Russia a year ago.

Peace between Ukraine and Russia can be achieved only when the parties to the conflict can communicate with each other, “therefore, the channels of communication must be open (…) If there is no communication, if the channels of discussion are cut off, then we give up even the hope of peace” , – said the Hungarian minister, reports Agerpres.

“As a neighboring country, for us an immediate ceasefire and peace is vital, not only because we are neighbors, but also because Hungarians are dying in this war,” Szijarto stressed. Representatives of the Hungarian ethnic community, who are citizens of Ukraine, were drafted into the Ukrainian army, many of them got to the front line, many died there, he added.

“So I represent a nation (…) whose members have already died in this war,” the Hungarian minister insisted in an interview with CNN, after earlier delivering a similar message at a UN Security Council meeting. Those who criticize Hungary’s position in favor of peace have not yet lost their lives in the war in Ukraine, Szijjarto said during an intervention in New York.

There he met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, after which he appreciated the fact that support for peace is stronger in the UN than in the European Union, where those who propose diplomatic solutions are “immediately called pro-Russian.” “The atmosphere in New York (at the headquarters of the UN, ed.) is very different from the atmosphere in Brussels, where those who speak about the importance of peace are immediately labeled as pro-Russian,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister noted.

There are no winners in war, only losers, “and the longer it lasts, the more people will lose, the more damage there will be and the more people will die,” concluded Peter Sijarto.
