According to Reuters and News.ro, the death toll from the February 6 earthquakes in Turkey has reached 44,128, bringing the death toll in Turkey and Syria to over 50,000.

More than 160,000 buildings with 520,000 apartments were destroyed or severely damaged.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said that more than 600 people were checked in connection with the collapse of the buildings. Among those detained are 79 persons responsible for the construction, 74 persons who are legally responsible for the buildings, 13 owners and 18 persons who made changes to the buildings.

In Gaziantep province, the mayor of Nurdagi district was arrested as part of the same investigation.

Almost three weeks after the disaster, there is still no final death toll from the earthquakes.

A firefighter who works in Antakya says that human remains are found under the rubble every day. “Very difficult. You can’t tell a person to continue his work if he pulls a person’s hand out of there,” explained the firefighter.

The nearly two million people left homeless are in tents, container houses and other shelters set up to house the victims.

More than 335,000 tents have been set up in the affected areas, and camps with container houses have been built in 130 places.
