British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was “doing everything” to reach a post-Brexit deal with the European Union on trade deals with Northern Ireland, saying it was vital to ensure a return to power-sharing in the province, AFP reported. .

“There is unfinished business on Brexit and I want to finish it,” Sunak told The Sunday Times.

Sunak said he would try to address the concerns of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which is concerned that the EU will retain influence over Northern Ireland.

Earlier on Saturday, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told reporters that Britain and the EU were making progress and that a deal was possible but not guaranteed in the coming days.

The Sunday Times reported that the announcement was expected on Monday, when Conservative MP Rishi Sunak was announced to be in parliament.

The British Prime Minister said that he hoped for a positive outcome of the negotiations, and said that he would spend the weekend on their conclusion.

Sunak, alluding to DUP concerns, said the Good Friday peace deal for Northern Ireland was an unbalanced Brexit deal over the province’s trade rules.

The DUP prevented the Northern Ireland Assembly from functioning in protest at the rules.

“If we want to restore the institutions of devolution in Northern Ireland, which I very much want, and I think that’s what the people need and deserve, then we have to resolve the issue of protocol,” Sunak said.

He said Wednesday’s shooting of a police officer “reminds us of the delicate situation in Northern Ireland, of its fragility, and we must not take that for granted. And therefore, the implementation of the distribution of power is very important.”
