In June 2022, Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison in a trial for human trafficking after years of using his fame and fortune to recruit underage women and girls for sex.

The defense requested that his two sentences be served concurrently, not consecutively, so that R. Kelly could end his life outside of prison.

“The likelihood of him reoffending at the age of 80 is slim,” his lawyers insisted, adding that “most of his crimes were committed half a century ago.”

In February 2019, prosecutors in Kelly’s hometown of Chicago charged him with aggravated sexual assault of four women between 1998 and 2010, the youngest of whom was 14 at the time.
