Almost a year after Will Smith’s Palme d’Or, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which presents the Oscars, remains an honored stage and is preparing to prevent a similar incident from happening again, reports Time magazine, citing News .ro.
The memory of the moment Will Smith slapped Chris Rock live at the 2022 ceremony still haunts Hollywood in the weeks leading up to the 95th ceremony on March 13.
The Academy of Arts and Sciences, which hands out the prized statuettes each year, said this week it had created a crisis team to deal with similar situations in the future.
“We have a crisis team, which was not the case before. We’ve come up with a lot of strategies in case something happens,” CEO Bill Cramer told Time magazine.
Last week, Academy President Janet Young said:
“What happened on stage was absolutely unacceptable. And the response of our organization was inadequate.”
“The Academy must demonstrate transparency and full responsibility in its actions, especially in a period of crisis,” she added.
On March 28, 2022, in the middle of the Oscar ceremony, Chris Rock made a joke about Jade Pinkett Smith’s haircut. Her husband Will Smith stood up and slapped the comedian.
Moments later, the Oscar-winning actor for Best Actor publicly apologized to Chris Rock, first on Instagram and then in a video, saying his “attitude was unacceptable.”
