Tesca, Britain’s biggest supermarket chain, followed the example of other major retailers on Wednesday and imposed restrictions on customers buying salad vegetables because of supply problems in the island nation, Reuters reported.
Tesco has introduced a maximum purchase limit of 3 tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers per customer.
The UK arm of German chain Aldi announced the same restriction earlier on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Asda introduced restrictions on 8 categories of fruit and vegetables, while Morrisons limited itself to 6 categories.
While Sainsbury’s, the UK’s second largest supermarket group, has not announced similar measures, as has Lidl, another major player in the UK market.
Britons have shared numerous photos on social media this week of empty supermarket shelves, with tomatoes the most acute problem.
“Difficult weather conditions in southern Europe and North Africa have led to crop failures for some fruit and vegetables, including tomatoes and bell peppers,” said Andrew Opie, director of the British Retail Consortium, which represents all of the UK’s major supermarkets.
According to him, this situation is expected to last for several weeks.
