Iga Svyatek categorically dominated the match with Lyudmila Samsonova and advanced to the quarterfinals of the “WTA 1000” tournament in Dubai.

Svyatek defeated the Russian, who is ranked 13th in the WTA ranking, after an hour and 16 minutes of play, the score 6-1, 6-0.

Samsonova suffered a dramatic defeat by Belinda Bencic on February 12 in the final of the WTA 500 competition in Abu Dhabi. In the tie-break of the second set, Lyudmila missed three match points and lost in the decider: 1-6, 7-6(8), 6-4.

• Iga, who lost only two games in her first match in Dubai (against Leila Fernandez), will beat Karolina Pliskova (18 WTA) in the quarters.

• The last meeting between Sviatek and Pliskova ended with a score of 6-0, 6-0 in favor of the Pole (WTA Rome 2021 final).

• After rising to the 1st place in the WTA ranking (April 2022), Iga Svyatek won 52 and lost 8. This century, only Serena Williams (55) and Justine Henin (54) have won more in their first 60 matches at No. 1. 1 in the whole world.

• Romania no longer has a singles representative in Dubai, with Iryna Begu defeated in the first round, Sorana Kirstya eliminated in the second round on Tuesday and Ana Bohdan in the round of 16.

The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships runs from February 19 to 25 on hard, is part of the “WTA 1000” category and has a total prize pool of $2,788,468. Simona Halep won the tournament in 2015 and 2020, and the last edition went to Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.
