The “heart” of the Earth’s inner core, i.e. the center of the planet, is likely an iron ball that has a radius of about 650 kilometers, according to new data. scientific estimates.

Researchers from the School of Geosciences of the Australian National University in Canberra, who made a corresponding publication in the journal Nature Communications, based their calculations on the study of seismic waves passing through the interior of the Earth.

The study showed for the first time that these waves “echo” repeat across the entire diameter of our planet up to five times. The speed at which the waves propagate, according to scientists, indicates the presence of a distinct inner sphere, separate from the outer layer of the inner core.

The study of the center of the earth is considered vital to understanding the creation and evolution of the earth. The presence and size of a separate inner core within the inner core has long been a hypothesis, but also the subject of scientific controversy.
