European Commissioner for Enlargement Oliver Vargei said in the European Parliament that the European Union is waiting for Serbia to join the sanctions against Russia, but the absence of such a decision cannot be the reason for the suspension of accession negotiations with Serbia, reports Serb. news agency Beta, quoted by Rador.

“We expect that Serbia will harmonize its foreign policy and security policy with the EU policy, and this also means the introduction of sanctions against Russia, but if it does not, this will not be a reason to interrupt the negotiations,” said Vargei, answering a question from an MEP.

Vargei said that the EU asked Serbia to take its side and align its policy with the European one.

“For many member states, this is an important criterion. But according to the new methodology and structure of negotiations, the harmonization of foreign policy and security policy is not a criterion for the termination of negotiations. This is the last measure, and I hope that Serbia will understand how important it is, and let’s hope that it will change its position,” Vargei said.
