Queen Camilla’s husband will wear the crown of Queen Mary, Elizabeth II’s grandmother, during the coronation ceremony of her and the new King Charles III on May 6, Buckingham Palace’s press office said on Tuesday, according to AFP and Reuters, citing Agerpres.
The crown was “removed” from the Tower of London, where it was displayed alongside the Crown Jewels, “to carry out some modification work ahead of” the coronation ceremony, Buckingham Palace announced in a press release.
It will be “the first time in modern history that an existing crown is used to crown a (king or queen) consort instead of creating a new order for durability and efficiency,” the same statement said.
Queen Mary, wife of King George V, wore this crown at his coronation in 1911.
The “minor” changes to be made will “reflect the individual style of the Queen Consort”, who is currently suffering from COVID-19, and will “pay homage” to the late Elizabeth II, Buckingham Palace officials added.
Several Cullinan III, IV and V diamonds from the personal collection of Queen Elizabeth II, which the former sovereign often wore as brooches, will be integrated into this crown.
The royal couple thus avoided using the famous 105-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond, the return of which was demanded by India, according to Reuters.
The Koh-i-Noor, one of the largest faceted diamonds in the world, was exported from India by the British East India Company during the colonial era and presented to Queen Victoria. It was mounted in the crown, which was last worn by the grandmother of King Charles III at his coronation ceremony.
Pakistan, then part of India under the British Empire, as well as Afghanistan also claimed ownership of the famous diamond after gaining independence from India in 1947.
According to AFP, less than three months before the coronation of King Charles III, intensive preparations are underway for this ceremony, which will take place in Westminster Abbey on May 6 and which will open three days of celebrations on the occasion of an event of planetary importance. .
The concert will take place on May 7 at Windsor Castle in west London, and a raffle for 100,000 seats to the general public began in early February.
The public will be invited to participate on May 7 in a “big dinner” organized nationally through local parties across the country. Britons will then be encouraged to take voluntary actions on Monday, May 8, which will be a public holiday.
On a website created for the occasion, Buckingham Palace released the official logo for Friday’s coronation ceremony. As a tribute to the new king’s love for nature, the blue and red emblem features the symbolic flowers of the four nations of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales).
The same site also offers food recipes and links to a list of coronation songs performed by various artists, including the Spice Girls, Queen and Harry Styles. Rapper Dizzy Rascal, convicted last year of assaulting his ex-fiancée, has finally been removed from the list.
