“This is a gentleman, a Greek from Mariupol. He spent 26 days in a shelter, his shoe became one with his leg – a large man, 80 years old. And this is his daughter from Thessaloniki, she came to pick him up from the border.”
OUR Yiannis Yannakopoulos shows one after another 32 photographs of an exhibition called I’m leavingwhich will open its doors to the public next Wednesday in Serafio.
Photos from their first delivery Doctors of the worldin the city of Siret, Romania, on the border with Ukrainein March 2022, two weeks after the start of the Russian invasion.
As he points out, it was an alien experience. And this is a man who has been – with humanitarian missions – in the most hot Spots planet over the past 21 years.
“They went out of the border every hour 200-250 peoplewe saw people, mostly women and children,” he notes and points out that there was one with them suitcase.
He teaches photography at a school in Athens: “I made my students put their whole lives in one suitcase – they couldn’t choose.”
“The queue of fathers seeing off their families was terrible – fathers say goodbye, and the usual picture is women say goodbye to men leaving for the front. It was the other way around here,” he says, before adding pointedly, “It was impressive that they were bringing their pets with them.”
I’m leaving
“With the name of my exhibition, the Ukrainian word I’m leaving (pronounced leaving), which conveys the importance of a violent and sudden flight, a forced flight, through my photographic lens, I have continued to search for 21 years in the missions of the World Doctors on the front lines, whether in a war zone. or in a natural disaster.
With these words, among other things, Giannis Giannakopoulos invites you to the photo exhibition “Doctors of the World”.
“…my exhibition is dedicated to the Doctors of the World and to the memory of Theophilos Rosenberg, the man who showed us the way to the values of Humanism and Medicine in this field.”
