Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Saturday he plans to return to Brazil “in the coming weeks” after spending more than a month in the United States, Reuters and News.ro reported.

Bolsonaro left for Florida two days before Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in as Brazil’s new president on Jan. 1 and later applied for a six-month tourist visa to extend his stay in the United States.

“Nowhere is better than at home… We know that Brazil is a fantastic country,” Bolsonaro told a gathering of Brazilians in Boca Raton.

“I also want to return to Brazil. I intend to return to Brazil in the coming weeks,” he said.

Returning to Brazil could be a risk for Bolsonaro. Brazil’s Supreme Court has agreed to open an investigation into Bolsonaro for allegedly inciting anti-democracy protests that ended with his supporters storming government buildings in Brasilia.

His plans to return have been called into question after his lawyer told Reuters last month that the former president wanted to “enjoy being a tourist in the United States for a few months before deciding what his next step will be.”

However, a US official said Bolsonaro would return to Brazil after the carnival, which ends on February 22.
