In an island country, one would expect political and development planning to adapt to geomorphology. Unfortunately, the opposite has been happening for decades. The Akritas, who guard the country’s borders with their daily presence, are deprived of the same opportunities as those of us who live in urban centers or can reach them by road. The Axion Hellas organization was founded in 2016 with the aim of supporting these remote communities and helping residents in all aspects of daily life: care, education, entertainment, sports, not only with visits and activities, but also with the creation of a permanent infrastructure. In most cases, missions so far have been flown by watercraft. In unfavorable times, dozens of volunteers arrived in the Aegean and Ionian Islands to transport doctors of all specialties, teachers, theater experts, and cooks.

They are warmly welcomed there, as the world recognizes the complexity of their transition and the fact that each destination has a different provision, based on the needs of residents: somewhere you need a playground or a football field, somewhere you need a library or support for a local clinic. . With the know-how, the non-profit organization recently carried out a ground mission: from 20 to 22 October, doctors carried out 1,442 medical examinations on 447 residents of the six villages of Policarpi, Orma, Megaplatano, Sarakini, Monastiraki and Pik in the prefecture of Pella.

Axion Hellas’ efforts so far have attracted new members, donations and valuable “allies” from all areas. One of them is Stefanos Korkolis, who decided to celebrate his 35th anniversary of singing on January 25 in Megaro by dedicating this unique evening to the spirit of volunteering. The great composer and pianist, who identified his name with the hits sung by all of us, decided to donate the proceeds from the anniversary concert to support the activities of Axion Hellas. On the same evening, the composer presented his new works for the symphony orchestra for the first time. He was accompanied on the stage of the Megaros Musikis by renowned performers Eleonora Zouganelis, Panos Muzourakis, Sofia Manousakis, soloist Thanasis Polikandriotis, the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Anastasios Simeonidis. Tickets for the event have been sold out, so the same show will take place tomorrow, Saturday, after increased public interest. And the proceeds from this evening will go to an organization that looks after our Akritas.
