
In 2018, MApN signed a cooperation protocol with the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) to develop a satellite telecommunication system of national security interest. The first task was the launch of a geostationary telecommunication satellite (GEO), after which the Ministry of Defense will submit technical documentation to the parliament, and in the next period, regulatory acts will be adopted for the rapid development of this project.
The artificial satellite was to cover the national territory and the theaters of operations where Romania deployed its armed forces, with both military and civilian applications being considered. The possibility of this project was justified by the high costs that MApN covered for the lease and provision of satellite telecommunication services: 7.5 million euros in the period 2009-2018.
