Four years after she refused to perform at the Super Bowl to protest the way the game was run, Rihanna will finally perform on Sunday to “represent black women,” according to AFP.

The nine-time Grammy Award-winning entertainer will take the stage during halftime of the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles as they try to win this year’s NFL Championship, the nation’s biggest televised event.

“The Super Cup is one of the most important stages in the world. As scary as it is because I haven’t been on stage in seven years, there’s something exciting about this challenge,” she explained at a press briefing on Thursday.

“It’s important for me to do it this year. This is important for representative reasons. It is important that my son sees this,” she added.

The halftime concert, which has already featured the world’s biggest stars including Prince, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Beyonce, is one of the highlights of the event.

The Barbadian artist, who gave birth to her first child in May, has not performed since 2016.

In 2019, she announced that she had turned down an opportunity to perform at the show in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick, then one of the NFL’s rising stars, who protested racism and police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem before games.

After that, his career went downhill as no team wanted to sign him. The quarterback filed a lawsuit against NFL team owners, which was later dropped after a financial settlement.

Rihanna did not hold a traditional press conference before the Super Bowl, but gave an interview to the presenter from Apple Music, the sponsor of the event. According to the singer, the concert will reflect her Caribbean roots.

“That’s a big part of why it’s important to me to do this show: representation. Representation of immigrants. Representing black women everywhere. It’s important that people see the possibilities,” she said.

Rihanna did not announce which of the artists will be invited to perform with her.
