4 exceptional Romanian and international art exhibitions

“Ion Teodorescu-Sion. History of life”, curator Dr. Elena Olariou

The new retrospective of Art Safari and the Bucharest City Museum draws attention to a great master of art: Ion Teodorescu-Sion, an artist who is part of the renewed generation of the beginning of the last century, who offers new themes and innovative techniques that he will relate to the Romanian reality. The artist was an ardent Unionist and a military hero of the First World War (therefore, the orders and medals he received for heroism in the Great War are displayed alongside his paintings).

He studied in Romania and Paris and experimented in all the artistic styles of his time (Impressionism, Pointillism, Fauvism, Cubism, Symbolism), which makes him special. Monumental neo-Romanian compositions, grandiose portraits of peasants, women in the guise of forest goddesses, and still lifes rich in details – these are just some of the surprises that the exhibition opens to visitors in a special scenography. Art Safari brings together approx. 150 works by Sion from private collections and museums throughout Romania, many exhibited for the first time.

“Masters of Spanish painting. 19th century and the birth of impressionism”. curator Dr. Helena Alonso

The exhibition is built around the famous Spanish impressionist Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923), the “Master of Light”, in the context of the international celebration of his centenary, and Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949), a versatile artist who enjoyed great international success. Joaquín Sorolha excellently painted portraits and monumental works on social and historical themes. His works are distinguished by a masterful depiction of people and landscapes under the sunlight of his native country. His competitor, Mariano Fortuny, has been compared with the famous impressionist Edouard Manet – the Spaniard’s works were a great success at the time, unlike Manet’s paintings, which were considered scandalous.

“Palace of Memory. Focus on the French art scene with the Marcel Duchamp Award” curated by Daria de Beauvais, assisted by Dr. Lisa Colin

Famous internationally recognized artists such as Tatiana Trouvet, Fara Atassi or Michel Blazy come from France. The Marcel Duchamp Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious awards for contemporary art, organized by the Association for the International Diffusion of French Art (ADIAF). “Palace of Memory”, in Palatul Palatul Dacia-Romania! Mircea Cantor, the only Romanian artist to receive this award, is part of the selection of artists by the chief curator of the Tokyo Palace, Daria de Beauvais. Another artist present in Bucharest, Clément Cogitore, combines contemporary art with cinematography. For the Paris Opera, he reimagined the ballet show “Les Indes Galantes” with Crump dancers. His works can be found in collections such as Louis Vuitton, Daimler Art Collection or the Pompidou Museum.

“Young blood 2.0. What’s new in art?”, curator Mihai Zgondoyu

Art of Generation Z, which remixes currents, movements and presents themes of today’s reality. More than 50 artists from major cities of Romania, as well as from the Republic of Moldova, can be found in the selection of curator Mihai Zgonda. From paintings, video art, digital art, NFT to installations, objects and textile art, definitely to the taste of young and very young audiences, but also interesting new: super modern art needs to be viewed with an extremely open mind!
