The school teachers’ union announced its intention to resign on January 24, asking for “practical signs that we are moving towards amending the PD” at the time. Trying to resolve the issues that arose in connection with the ambiguous PD, the government “passed” through the parliament two relevant legislative acts that did not satisfy the art world.

Recall that the School of Drama of the National Theater is still occupied by its students, as well as the Chiller building and the Rex Theater, which were occupied by students of the country’s theater schools.

Announcement in detail:

“We, the professors of the Higher School of Dramatic Arts of the National Theatre, expressing our disagreement with P. 85/2022, which humiliates studies, creates a number of problems in the world of work and discredits the performing arts industry, on January 24, 2023, we announced our decision to retire from office on February 8, 2023, unless there has been a significant change in the presidential decree during this time. Thus, we also supported the basic demands of the students who occupied the School.

After the deadline we set, that is July 2, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Mr. Giatromanolakis, called our delegation together and presented the initiatives he had already taken recently on this issue (including the recent amendment), as well as a number of intentions for future improvements.

We believe that these proposals do not meet our basic needs, as there is still no public commitment to significantly change the DP. 85/2022 on the inclusion of art school graduates in the TE category. (technological education) and recognition/classification of their research.

Therefore, knowing the criticality of the situation and the seriousness of this decision, we regretfully proceed to terminate our cooperation with the School of the National Theater and withdraw from current contracts and / or renewals of our contracts for the second semester in accordance with the curriculum of the year.

Let the state take responsibility towards the students who risk losing their year, as well as before the prestige of the National Theater School of the country, which is undermined by the mentioned presidential decree.
