Norwegian police announced on Friday that they intend to continue questioning Andriy Medvedev, the former commander of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, who fled Russia to Norway last month after fighting in the Ukraine war, Reuters reported.
Medvedev, who told Reuters this week that he was disclosing information to help bring perpetrators to justice, handed over “some digital material” to police, Norway’s national criminal police said in a statement. , Kripos.
The materials are being analyzed, added Kripos, the Norwegian police unit responsible for investigating war crimes.
Medvedev remains a witness and is not required to communicate with investigators in any way, Kripos said. Medvedev is not suspected of anything except illegal border crossing. The former commander requested asylum in Norway.
“It appears that Medvedev wants to continue to talk more” about his time in Wagner, police said.
Security measures were also taken for Medvedev’s safety through “visible and invisible” measures, police added, without giving details.
Wagner’s mercenaries are fighting in Donetsk
“Wagner” forces are fighting a bloody and exhausting battle with Ukrainian troops in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.
In an interview with Reuters published on Wednesday, Medvedev cited as an example an incident he witnessed in which two people who did not want to fight were shot in front of recently released prisoners who had joined Wagner’s group.
Asked about other incidents he witnessed, he said he could not comment on them at the moment because of an investigation by Norwegian police.
Wagner said Medvedev worked in the group’s “Norwegian branch” and was “brutal with prisoners.”
“Be careful, it’s very dangerous,” the group said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Thursday, echoing earlier comments about Medvedev made by Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin, a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin. (source Agerpres)
