Didier Deschamps knew about Raphael Varane’s rejection

Immediately after the Real Madrid defender’s decision, the Blues coach responded with a statement, admitting that he had spoken to the 29-year-old player.

“Rafael called me a few days ago to explain that he wants to end his international career. He is a smart guy who knows how to take his time and think, weigh all the pros and cons before making a decision.

Without going into the details of our conversation, Varane believes that he has reached the end of his adventure with the French team.

I have been through a situation somewhat similar to his, I understand his reasoning and respect his decision, even if it may seem sad, considering that in the national team he has always behaved in an exemplary manner, from start to finish, as a true leader.

After Matuidi, Mandanda and Lloris, Rafael became the fourth 2018 World Champion to retire at international level. I want to emphasize his honesty and unwavering commitment to the French shirt.

It was a pleasure to train him and I wish him all the best,” said Didier Deschamps, reports L’Equipe.
