Countries such as the United States or Germany may eventually send fighter jets to Ukraine, believes the high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell, who was quoted by dpa and Agerpres on Thursday.
The head of European diplomacy reminded before the Ukraine-EU summit scheduled for Friday in Kyiv that the supply of Western tanks for Ukrainian forces was initially very controversial, but in the end an agreement was reached and this “red line” was crossed.
Borrell also noted that all arms deliveries to Ukraine were accompanied by warnings about the escalation of the war with the Russian occupiers.
However, the European official declined to say whether or not the fighter jets would be delivered because “my job is to try to reach a consensus, and one of the best ways is not to take positions that could jeopardize it.”
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki recently said he was open to the idea of Ukraine getting fighter jets, but Germany and the US, which recently promised Ukrainians tanks, are currently rejecting the possibility.
Earlier this week, President Joe Biden said his administration would not send fighter jets to Ukraine after US media reported it was being discussed in NATO.
“No,” the US president answered when asked by a White House journalist whether he would supply fighter jets to Kyiv.
And Germany firmly rules out sending fighter jets to Ukraine
Politico journalists wrote last week that this measure will be strongly supported, especially by the Baltic states, given that these countries, in turn, fear possible Russian aggression.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in turn, on Sunday ruled out the possibility of sending fighter jets to Ukraine.
“There is no mention of fighter jets. I can only advise that we do not enter into a permanent bidding war when it comes to weapons systems,” said the German chancellor in an interview with the Tagesspiegel newspaper.
“If after the decision (about tanks) in Germany a new discussion starts” about something else, “this is not serious and undermines the confidence of citizens in the government’s decisions,” he added.
In an interview, he again warned about the “risk of escalation” in relations with Russia. “There is no war between NATO and Russia. We will not allow such an escalation,” he emphasized.
