After a police chase, three young men were arrested for stealing catalytic converters from parked cars. Thessaloniki.
Together with their identified and sought accomplice, they are accused of dismantling three catalytic converters from the same number of vehicles early on Tuesday morning (January 31) in the Toumba area. Before a police check, they accelerated to escape by breaking a red traffic light and moving through one-way streets.
Three of them were stopped and arrested. This is an 18-year-old Greek and two Bulgarian citizens, aged 27 and 18, who were brought to the prosecutor’s office for criminal prosecution with materials against them.
Catalytic converter theft has become a scourge in recent times. The reason the gangs steal them is because the inside of the catalyst is coated with precious metals like platinum, rhodium and palladium.
According to experts, depending on the car and the catalyst, a potential thief will earn up to 150 euros by selling the metal to “scrap” enterprises. On the other hand, the damage they cause to a car is in the hundreds of euros.
