Olympus: Nomination file sent to UNESCO

According to the relevant announcement, the Olympus nomination file for inclusion in the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites has been submitted to the competent committee of UNESCO after the cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

In October last year, a preliminary nomination file was submitted, which was evaluated by the UNESCO Committee.

The two ministries and the Organization for Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA) collaborated in the last quarter and, taking into account all the Commission’s comments, finalized the contents of the file.

Mount Olympus is associated with ancient mythology

As Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni said, “Olympus, the highest mountain in our country, is associated with ancient mythology, with Homer, with the history of Greece throughout the centuries. The residence of the gods is one of the strongest Greek brands.

We have systematically and effectively worked with the competent authorities to compile a complete dossier that includes the necessary conditions for the protection and promotion of the unique cultural and ecological image of Mount Olympus and its inclusion in the list of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Monuments.

Protection shield for Olympus

“We hope that in a few months UNESCO will embrace the mythical mountain. Step by step, we have created a groundbreaking protective shield for Olympus, since a year ago we issued a Presidential Decree on the protection and management of the natural environment of the region, and today we presented an updated list of Olympus nominations for the list of cultural and heritage natural monuments,” said the Deputy Minister of the Environment and energy Giorgos Amiras.

The UNESCO decision to include Mount Olympus in the list of world cultural and natural heritage sites is expected by September 2023.

It is noted that in Greece so far only two areas are registered in the List of monuments of cultural and natural heritage, Meteora and Mount Athos.
