Artifact: A new app from the creators of Instagram wants to change the news

About four years after leaving Instagram, the two founders of the platform are back with a new app (application).

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger have announced the launch of Artifact, an app that promises a “personalized news feed” powered by artificial intelligence.

In an Instagram post, Krieger said that he and Systrom “worked with a talented team” for over a year to launch the service. User engagement for the new app is being phased in as the waitlist was opened to the public yesterday.

Unlike Instagram, the app focuses more on articles than photos. Artifact will recommend content based on the user’s interests and allow you to connect with friends.

The main feed will feature popular articles from major news organizations and small bloggers, and each user’s feed will be personalized based on what they click on.

The launch of the new app comes at a time of intense activity in the social media world. Following the turmoil and uncertainty at Twitter following its acquisition by Elon Musk, a number of new services aim to help users get news and personal updates in one feed.

Meanwhile, TikTok’s rapid growth is still causing many apps, including Instagram, to copy its features.

According to Platformer, Artifact is “TikTok for texts” and perhaps “even a surprise attack on Twitter.”

Recall that Instagram went public in 2010, and two years later, Systrom and Krieger sold the Meta app for $1 billion. The duo left Instagram in 2018 due to disagreements with Mark Zuckerberg over the direction of the app.
