Bad weather: Where problems arose

In the process was bad weather today until morning storms hit different regions of the country. Characteristically, a large amount of rain fell in a short time, which led to the flooding of many areas of Attica. Zakynthos was particularly affected by the weather. On the island, schools will also be closed today Friday, and classes will be held remotely. The severe weather caused many problems on the island: floods in Lagan, Kalamaki and Agios Dimitrios, and traffic was stopped in some places, as there were many portable materials on the roads, and small landslides also occurred. At the same time, as announced yesterday, schools in the Dodecanese will also remain closed as severe weather conditions continue in the Aegean.

Several problems arose in Attica. Hail fell in the center of the city to Syntagma. Due to the large amount of rain in a short period of time, the water in many main streets, such as Vasilisis Sofia, formed waterfalls. A large amount of water also came down from the Strefi hill, as a result of which the movement of the townspeople was especially difficult for several hours.

Schools in Zakynthos are closed today, classes will be held remotely.

Traffic problems arose on Kifisias Avenue, at the intersection with Spirou Louis Street in Marousi, when a large amount of water blocked the vehicles for some time. A pavement on Harilau Trikoupi Street at a height near Alexandra Avenue collapsed, but crews filled the crack with gravel to keep pedestrians and vehicles out of harm’s way until the necessary work was done.

Traffic was sometimes interrupted yesterday: in the area of Aspropyrgos, on Okeanidon street at the intersection with Marathon street, on Piraeus street at the intersection with Petru Ralli on the way to Piraeus and on Hamosterne on the way to Athens, at the Lachanas exit on Kifissos avenue, on Vouliagmenis avenue, on height of Antheon street, downstream towards Athens. Traffic was also interrupted on the new beach towards Athens in the delta of Faliro at the height of “Stavros Niarchos”. In Kallithea, the yard of the 3rd kindergarten was flooded with water and, for security purposes, an operation was carried out to remove the children. In the municipality of Vari-Vula-Voulagmeni, when 38 millimeters of rain fell in 30 minutes, “the existing waterways could not channel this volume, so flood phenomena occurred.”
