In Fiji, one of the rarest flowers in the world – many locals have never seen it

It is the national flower of Fiji and one of the rarest on the planet.

It grows only on Taveuni, the third largest island in Fiji, at an altitude of more than 600 meters, in the caldera of a volcano. The uniqueness of the soil is one of the secrets of a special plant, since all attempts to transplant it to other Fiji islands have failed. Access to it is the most difficult route for the island.

Blooms for about three months a year. Its bicolor flower consists of a crimson sheath with white teardrop-shaped inflorescences.

Due to the inaccessibility, many residents saw it only from photographs. In 2013, Tagimusia’s image was used in place of Queen Elizabeth on the front of the Fiji $50 note.

According to island legend, as reported by BBC Travel, behind an extremely rare flower with two-colored petals lies the tragic love story of “Romeo and Juliet of Fiji.”
