At least seven people were killed near San Francisco on Monday in two gun attacks believed to have been carried out by a single person, local television stations said, and local authorities said a suspect had been arrested, AFP said.

“The suspect has been arrested. There is no longer any danger to the public,” the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, which includes the city of Half Moon Bay, wrote on Twitter.

The press conference originally announced for 02.00 GMT has not yet taken place.

The sheriff’s office previously said its agents responded after “an armed attack that resulted in multiple casualties.”

Both shootings took place on farms not far from each other, local ABC and NBC affiliates reported.

According to ABC, the eighth victim was seriously injured.

According to a local official quoted by NBC, the victims are Chinese agricultural workers.

The arrest of the suspect, identified by local ABC and NBC stations as 67-year-old Zhao Chunli, was covered by both television stations.

The Asian man, wearing a gray vest with red sleeves and a light gray cap, is placed on the ground, handcuffed, then searched before being escorted away by several police officers.

According to NBC, the man was spotted in his car in the parking lot of the Half Moon Bay police station, and a gun was found in his car.

This new carnage comes less than 48 hours after an Asian gunman killed 11 people at a dance hall near Los Angeles, again lamented by California Governor Gavin Newsom.

“I’m at the hospital to meet with victims of a mass shooting when I’m called back to report another shooting. This time in Half Moon Bay. Tragedy after tragedy,” the Democrat tweeted.

Joe Biden has also been briefed, his press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said on Twitter. The American president “asked federal law enforcement agencies to provide all necessary assistance to local authorities,” she clarified.
