New Museum in Thessaloniki for treasures from the excavations of the meter

The Ministry of Culture and Sports is starting to redevelop and transform a building with an area of more than 6,000 square meters into a museum, at the intersection of tracks (Crossroads), at the station “Fountain” st. Thessaloniki Metropolitan Railway, according to its announcement.

The museum in the Crossover building, built as part of the metro infrastructure, has as its main narrative axis the urban development of the city, along its central artery. It will operate independently and at the same time in parallel with the museum, which is being set up to operate in the capital’s Pavlos Melas Park, with antiquities from the metro excavations.

The building, located at the crossroads (Crossroads), at the station “Fountain”, is intended to be used as a modern museum exhibition and storage of free-standing antiquities and part of the 300,000 movable finds of the underground excavations. The preliminary architectural study, approved by the Central Archaeological Council, includes all necessary modifications and additions to the building and its surroundings.

As the Minister of Culture and Sports, Lina Mendoni, said, “the building at the Fontan station is one of two museums that will house antiquities obtained during excavations of the metro. The museum in Crossover highlights the urban development in Thessaloniki palimpsest and works together with the museum, which is being prepared in the barracks building in the Pavlos Melas park of the capital.”

The antiquities that will be on display are chosen to tell the story of the city and the excavations of the great project. The central idea of the exhibition focuses on a polycentric organization that defines the building and technological history of the city and at the same time enlivens its physiognomy.

According to the architectural design, the museum at the station “Fountain” is deployed on four levels with a total area of 6,370 sq.m. To serve the museum (reception, buffet), as well as to connect the building with the city, above-ground spaces are created. The entrance part serves as a landmark, as it is located in the center on Egnatia Street and in close proximity to the University and the International Exhibition of Thessaloniki.
