Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Sunday called “unacceptable” Berlin’s refusal to supply Kiev with Leopard heavy tanks, which it insists on at a time when the Russians are advancing, AFP reports. A Warsaw official says he will “form a small coalition of countries willing to donate some of their modern equipment” if Berlin refuses to agree.
“Germany’s position is unacceptable. Almost a year has passed since the beginning of the war. Innocent people die every day. Russian bombs wreak havoc in Ukrainian cities. Civilian targets are being attacked, women and children are being killed,” Mateusz Morawiecki told PAP, as quoted by Agerpres.
His statements came two days after a meeting of representatives of about 50 countries at the American base Ramstein in Germany.
At that time, Ukraine’s allies announced significant new arms deliveries to Ukraine, but could not agree on the delivery of heavy tanks, despite repeated requests from Ukraine.
Poland’s prime minister said he was waiting for a “clear statement” from Berlin about allowing the Leopard tanks it manufactures to be sent to countries that have them.
Poland, which says it is ready to supply Kiev with 14 Leopard tanks, has announced that it is in talks with about 15 countries on the matter.
If Berlin refuses to deliver Leopard tanks to Kyiv, “we will form a small coalition of countries ready to donate some of their modern equipment, their modern tanks, to Ukraine, which is fighting,” Moravetskyi said.
On Saturday, three Baltic foreign ministers called on Berlin to “immediately provide Leopard tanks to Ukraine,” citing the “special responsibility” of Germany, “the first European power.”
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said he ordered an inventory of Leopard 2 tanks amid growing criticism that he had not made a decision to send the combat vehicles to Ukraine, CNN reports.
