Athens: Parking two-wheelers is a tricky puzzle

A platform crane “lifts” motorcycles that have been parked – illegally – on sidewalks, sidewalks and corners in center of Athens. The image is familiar to those who move to the city center, as the respective cases of the municipality take place at least twice a week. Goggles, sidewalks on Stadiou, Panepistimiou, Academy, Syntagma streets and adjacent streets. Motorcycle is the fastest way to get around the city because of it traffic load. However, parking spaces for bicycles they are half of what is needed.

Athens is estimated to need 5,000-6,000 motorcycle parking spaces, but they have 3,500 outdoor parking spaces, explains the deputy mayor of the municipal police and public spaces. Vassilis Koromantos.

“Over the past two years, we have created about 1,000 additional parking spaces for motorcycles, but this is clearly not enough,” he adds. The Municipality of Athens and in particular Municipal Police, is in the process of looking for places where it would be possible to create parking spaces for motorcycles. “The bet is difficult because Athens is a complex city. Parking spaces should not be limited, buses should be able to turn and the road should be wide enough not to interfere with traffic.” Mr. Koromanthos explains “K”.. He also recalls that the technical conditions have been established and the relevant permit of the Ministry of Natural Resources has been issued for the creation of a parking lot for motorcycles, but so far there is no interest from private individuals.
