The Netherlands will send two launchers and missiles for Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, the country’s defense ministry said on Friday, AFP reports.
It is about a “joint project with the USA and Germany” aimed at “joint supply of Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine,” the report says.
This became known after Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced the country’s plans to join the US and Germany in sending the Patriot system to Ukraine at a meeting with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday.
Measures to speed up this process were taken during the meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine, which took place on Friday at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, the report says.
“This cooperation is the result of an urgent call by the President of Ukraine Zelenskyi,” who “wants air defense equipment so that his country can defend itself against continuous missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities,” the same source notes.
The Netherlands also announced that it will be responsible for training the Ukrainian military and will provide 100 vehicles with anti-aircraft guns purchased from the Czech Republic.
In late December, the United States announced that it would transfer the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine during Mr. Zelensky’s visit to Washington.
Berlin has also committed to providing one of these systems.
The Netherlands also announced that it had joined a “group of countries, including Germany,” which is studying the possibility of supplying Kiev with heavy tanks, including training soldiers.
Each Patriot battery consists of a truck-mounted launch system with eight launchers, each of which can hold up to four interceptor missiles, a ground-based radar, a control station and a generator.
