Representatives of Romanian television filed a criminal case on Tuesday over how they were purchased and disposed of tickets offered to public television at special prices by World Cup organizer Qatar 2022, Presshub.ro reported.
TVR initially launched a disciplinary investigation after some emails in which a citizen complained that Christian Oprean, coordinator of the public television delegation for the World Cup in Qatar, had sold him tickets for the France-Morocco match.
The tickets were marked “ROTVR”, intended for Romanian Television, as the official broadcaster of the event for Romania, and the plaintiff could not enter the stadium due to the special conditions under which the tickets could be used, the public television said in a press release, cited by Presshub.ro
Later in an interview with Paginademedia.ro, Christian Oprean said he bought 64 World Cup tickets “for friends” to “help”. At the same time, the coordinator of the TVR delegation from Qatar admitted that he did not inform the management of the institution because “there was no need” – in the context in which these facilities were offered to the Romanian FIFA Television Society through the EBU (European Broadcasting Union).
“Nevertheless, as a result of contacting the official portal available to FIFA for ordering tickets, TVR representatives learned that Mr. Oprean had purchased on behalf of TVR, but without authorization, not 64, but 712 tickets, access to various matches. 2022 FIFA World Cup.
By his actions, Mr. Christian Oprian exceeded his duties as coordinator of the TVR delegation to the CM in Qatar and abused his position to purchase and transfer to other people the tickets issued by FIFA officials to SRTv,” the public television said.
At the beginning of last week, Christian Oprean tendered his resignation pending the conclusion of a disciplinary investigation launched by TVR management, which halted internal proceedings.
