​A one-and-a-half-year-old girl and her father suffered corneal burns after “accidental” exposure to an ultraviolet lamp at the Victor Homoiu Children’s Clinical Hospital in Bucharest. Hospital authorities say they have launched an investigation, which is currently ongoing. The nurse involved resigned following the incident and the nurse will no longer work in the patient access area.

“A one-and-a-half-year-old minor patient came to the emergency department of the hospital accompanied by his father with respiratory symptoms. According to the results of rapid tests, a respiratory syncytial virus infection was detected, for which it was necessary to check both the child and the child. The father was isolated in a special room designated for patients with this type of infection. After the consultation, the patient received a recommendation from the doctor for home treatment. We clarify that during the examination, the doctor on duty found that the ultraviolet lamp was working, and he continued to close it. After further internal investigation, it turned out that the minor patient and the accompanying his father was accidentally exposed to an ultraviolet lamp for 45 minutes, suffering corneal burns that required medical attention,” they sent.

The representatives of the hospital say that an internal investigation has been launched in this case: “We note that the internal investigation was launched by the management of the hospital, which independently reported after the information that appeared in the public space, until now. there was no official notification from the patient’s family. On January 14, 2023, at 12:45 p.m., the family was contacted directly by the medical director of the Children’s Clinical Hospital, Dr. Viktor Gomoyu, who expressed his regret about the incident and inquired about the state of health of the patient and father, providing all the medical support that the hospital can provide.”

The incident is “absolutely regrettable, but it is isolated and in no way characterizes the medical activity currently carried out by the staff of the Children’s Clinical Hospital “Dr. Viktor Gomoiu”, hospital representatives say.

Hospital representatives are in constant contact with the patient’s parents, her state of health is “satisfactory so far”, reports Gomoiu hospital management.
