Former police officer Mykhailo Popkov, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of 80 people, told Vestyam Irkutsk that he is ready to fight, Russian TV channel Dozhd (Rain) reports.
Serial killer Mykhailo Popkov, nicknamed “The Maniac from Angarsk”, was convicted of murdering 79 women and another policeman, and recently confessed to two more murders after being taken to Irkutsk for further testimony.
When asked by a journalist what he dreams of, Popkov answered: “To join the army.”
However, he added that he was not thrilled with the idea of a frozen trench: “I would probably go for it without a second thought. Just to find yourself in a cold trench after a warm room, how long will a person last there?”.
The “Hangar maniac” added that he “might not be offered” to participate in the war.
According to Popkov, his military specialty — radio electronics — is in great demand: “Although everything has become more modern now… But even if I had been in prison for 10 years, it would not be so difficult to learn something quickly.” .
The “Hangar maniac” killed more than 80 women
Arrested in 2012, the 57-year-old former policeman was sentenced to life in prison in 2015 for the murders of 22 women and then again in 2018 to the same sentence for another 56 murders committed between 1992 and 2007. He was convicted of two more murders in 2021 and has now confessed to two more.
Mykhailo Popkov committed most of his crimes in Angarsk, a city in Siberia with a population of 230,000.
“Maniac from Angarsk” initially invited his victims to his place at night to rape them in his official police car.
These women, aged between 16 and 40, were killed by the criminal with an ax or hammer, as he himself told the Russian news site Meduza in December 2017.
The man said of him that he is a man who cleanses the city of prostitutes. Only two women survived his attacks.
