The United States is considering sending Stryker armored fighting vehicles to Ukraine in anticipation of a Russian offensive expected this spring, two sources close to the file told Politico.com on Tuesday, according to Agerpres.
This information followed last week’s announcement by the Biden administration that the US would send 50 Bradley military vehicles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. A Bradley armored car is usually equipped with a cannon, a machine gun and anti-armor shells.
The Stryker vehicles could be part of the next tranche of military aid, a US Defense Department official said on condition of anonymity.
The administration in Washington may make an official statement regarding the aid package to Kyiv next week during a meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine, which will be held in Germany.
“We have no reports at this time,” Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Garron Garn said.
- The United States provides Ukraine with new military aid worth $3 billion
- Why sending Bradley to Ukraine is a “great idea.” What the American general who commanded such tanks in “Desert Storm” says: “It could be a tank killer”
- Ukraine will also receive American Sea Sparrow missiles for the first time.
Although not as powerful as tanks, the General Dynamics Land Systems Stryker vehicles can operate in snow, mud and sand, but their cross-country mobility is somewhat limited because they are equipped with eight wheels rather than tracks.
The United States already provides Ukraine with various heavy weapons systems, including the HIMARS missile system and the NASAMS air defense system.
During the recent visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi to Washington, the United States promised to supply Kyiv with the Patriot air defense system.
On February 24, Russia launched an unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Ukraine. Moscow says it is conducting a “special military operation to de-Nazify” the neighboring country and protect the Russian-speaking population of Ukraine.
