Brazilian police fired tear gas on Sunday to try to disperse hundreds of supporters of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro who gathered outside Congress in Brasilia, a week after leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in, an AFP photographer said.

The area around the Congress was cordoned off by the authorities, but rioters who refuse to recognize Lula’s election managed to break through the security cordon, and several dozen of them managed to climb the ramp of this building with modern architecture to occupy the roof.

Dramatic images reminiscent of the invasion of the United States Capitol show a veritable wave of people streaming into Congress, where the House of Representatives and the Senate are located.

Demonstrations also took place on the roof, as well as on all lawns, including near the presidential palace.

Jair Bolsonaro, who was defeated by Lula in the second round of presidential elections on October 30, left Brazil at the end of the year to settle in the United States.
