The Louvre in Paris, the most visited museum in the world, will limit the number of daily visitors to 30,000 “to promote a comfortable visit and ensure optimal working conditions for the museum staff,” the institution said in a press release, according to News.ro.

Before the pandemic, the Louvre could receive up to 45,000 visitors per day, according to Art Newspaper. When it reopened after the lockdown in July 2020, it did not officially limit capacity.

The museum decided to limit its daily visits in June 2022, shortly after it was announced that Laurence de Cars would be the next president-director, but before she officially took office on September 1.

The Louvre Museum has announced an official change in daily visitor numbers, releasing its official figures for 2022. It had 7.8 million visitors last year, up 120% from 2021, but still down 19% from its peak of 9.6 million. in 2019.

Of the 7.8 million visitors to the Louvre in 2022, 30% were French, 70% were foreign, and 18% were from the US. Visitors from Asia were “virtually absent, despite a small increase at the end of the year,” according to the report. Additional figures show that 45% of visitors were under the age of 25, 60% were first-time visitors and 225,000 visitors took advantage of the Louvre’s extended opening hours on Friday evening.
