Fenerbahce and Galatasaray met in one of the biggest matches in the world, with a rivalry spanning over 100 years (the first match took place in 1909, Galatasaray – Fenerbahce 2-0).

Fenerbahçe, a group that appeared in 1907 in the Kadikoy district, has its origins in the streets of Istanbul, perceived as a working class team, while Galatasaray is a club founded in 1905 by Galatasaray Lyceum, an elite Turkish college , founded in 1481.

It is called the “Intercontinental Derby” because Fenerbahçe is based on the Asian side of Istanbul and Galatasaray is based on the European side.

Fenerbahce and Galatasaray are also fighting for the top spot in the Super League after a couple of years in which the two teams have experienced less glamorous moments (Fenerbahce haven’t won the title since 2014, Galatasaray haven’t won the title since 2019).

Fenerbahce are 2nd in the league with 35 points from 16 matches, just one behind today’s opponents, with three wins and two losses in their last five Superliga matches.

The team, coached by Portuguese Jorge Jesus, also reached the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League, winning a group that also included Rennes, Dynamo Kyiv and AEK Larnaca.

Fenerbahce also qualified for the round of 16 of the Turkish Cup by beating Istanbulspor on 20 December 2022 at home 3-1.

Galatasaray lead the Super Lig with 36 points from 16 games, one ahead of rivals Fenerbahce, and end a run of five straight league wins, including a 2-1 home derby against Beşiktaş and an impressive 7-0 away from Istanbul Basaksehir.

The team, trained by its former legendary player Okan Buruk, did not participate in the European Cups, finishing last season in a shameful 13th place, and in the Turkish Cup they reached the eighth final, beating Ankara at home on December 22, 2022. Keciorengucu (second league), score 1-0.

The last head-to-head match between the two rivals was a rematch of last season’s Super Lig, with Fenerbahce edging Galatasaray 2-0 at home after a 2-1 first leg win against Ali Sami Yen.
