​Almost 60% of Romania’s resident population has a secondary or higher education level, according to preliminary data from the 2022 census.

Thus, among the respondents, 43.5% have an average level of education (after high school, higher school, professional or technical master), 40.5% have a low level (primary, high school or not finished school), and 16.0% have a higher level.

Compared to the 2011 census, the number of illiterates decreased by approximately 100,000 – from 245,400 to 143,600.

The most educated Romanians and where there are problems

Most Romanians who have completed some form of higher education are self-identified ethnic Jews. Among them, 61% have completed at least college. They are followed by Greeks and Armenians with 52% and 48%, respectively.

Among ethnic Germans, 27% have a higher level of education, and among Hungarians – 12%.

17% of those who identified themselves as ethnic Romanians have a higher level of education.

Roma have the lowest rate of completion of higher education – 2%.

Above the national average of 43.5% in average educational attainment are 12 ethnic groups declared in the census. Italians are in first place, 56% of whom have completed some form of post-secondary, high school, professional or technical master’s education.

They are followed by Albanians and Hungarians with 53% and 50%, respectively.

Those who stated their ethnicity as Romanian have an average level of education of 47%, while Germans have about 34%.

A low level of education was declared by Roma – 82%, Turks – 56% and Croats -50%.

Among ethnic Romanians, 35% have a not low level of education.
