At least one person was killed and 57 injured when two subway trains collided in Mexico City, a metropolis of about 20 million people, authorities said Saturday, AFP reported.

“Sixteen people have been taken to the hospital. At the moment there are reports of tragic deaths,” the city’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, said on Twitter.

According to the first information, the collision occurred in the tunnel that connects Potrero and La Raza stations, on line 3, which crosses the city from north to south. The reasons are still unknown.

The Mexico City metro is often criticized for its lack of service. In May 2021, 26 people and several dozen more were injured after a bridge collapsed and a subway train fell.
