The United States will provide Ukraine with new military aid worth $3 billion, the largest package to date, the White House announced on Friday, AFP reports.
White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said the assistance, to be announced by the Pentagon later in the day, would also include armored personnel carriers, armored personnel carriers and howitzers.
Washington and Berlin already announced on Thursday the supply of Bradley and Marder infantry tanks to Kiev, but did not specify the models.
In service since the 1970s, the Marder is a light armored vehicle designed to transport troops. Their main armament is a 20-mm cannon. Bradley is more or less a member of the same family, in service since the early 1980s.
In the M2 model, they are equipped with a 25 mm gun as well as an anti-tank missile launcher and can carry six fighters in addition to the crew.
“Bradley is not a tank, but a tank killer,” Pentagon spokesman General Ryder said Thursday. “We believe that this will greatly help (Ukrainian forces) on the battlefield,” he added.
