Timisoara, together with Elefsina (Greece) and Veszprém (Hungary), received the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture in 2023.

They join more than 60 cities selected in previous years, both from across the EU and beyond. Throughout 2023, the new European Capitals of Culture will celebrate the title with events, exhibitions and performances.

To mark the occasion, Vice President Margaritis Schinas will attend a naming event at the Acropolis Museum in Athens on January 9, where the Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Maria Gabriel, will read an address. .

The event will also be an opportunity to take stock of the past year and celebrate the 2022 Capitals of Culture of Aix-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg), Kaunas (Lithuania) and Novi Sad (Serbia), according to a statement from the European Commission.

“The title of European Capital of Culture demonstrates the richness and diversity of European cultures, stimulates sustainable tourism and promotes the development of cities through culture. Also, the title has a long-term positive socio-economic effect for both the cities and the neighboring regions,” the message reads.

To be selected, cities had to develop a cultural program with a strong European dimension, promoting the active participation of residents and their communities.
