According to preliminary census data, there are 4,495,451 married men and 4,629,660 married women living in Romania, which may seem surprising. HotNews asked the National Institute of Statistics where this difference comes from.

“The number of married women differs from the number of married men for two reasons. The first is that at the time of the inspection, either the husband was away working abroad for more than 12 calendar months (in which case he was no longer included in the permanent population), or the wife was married to a foreigner. a citizen without residence in Romania,” INS representatives told us.

We remind you that according to the methodology used by the statistics, the permanent population represents all persons with Romanian citizenship, foreigners and stateless persons who have their usual place of residence on the territory of Romania. That is, the permanent population represents the population de facto which excludes emigrants but includes immigrants.

The INS also counts the resident population (something other than the permanent population), which represents the number of those who have Romanian citizenship and live in Romania. A person’s place of residence is the address at which he/she declares that he/she has the main place of residence, entered in the person’s identity card, recorded by the administrative authorities of the state.

In other words, the resident population represents the de jure population, which may also include emigrants.

The number of permanent residents of the country decreased to 19,053,815 inhabitants, according to the 2022 census. Compared to the previous census of 2011, Romania lost 1.1 million inhabitants.

According to the census, the number of permanent residents increased only in 3 poviats: Ilfov, Bystrytsia, and Suceava. In the rest of the population, the population decreased, the most decreased in Karash-Severin, Teleorman and Hunedoar.

Population decline has also led to fewer believers, but there is one religion that has managed to gain more followers over the past 10 years. Also, compared to the 2011 census, the current number of people who identify as atheist or have no religion has tripled, but the percentage remains low for the entire population, at around 0.3 percent each.
