Niku Marin, 44, who had an extensive criminal record, was finally jailed after new legislation gave judges greater sentencing powers.

A father-of-five who was found alive in a block of flats in Leeds has been jailed for 27 months.

He is now facing deportation for the seventh time after serving half of his prison term.

Appearing at Leeds Crown Court, Judge Simon Baptiste told Marin that Britain had enough “homegrown criminals” before warning him not to return to the country.

“You must understand that you are not allowed to enter Great Britain and you must not return to this country. If you do, the sentences will get longer and longer,” the judge told him.

Bashir Ahmed, prosecuting, earlier told the court that Marin had 20 convictions for 41 offences, many of them for theft and fraud.

He said Marin was first deported in October 2015 but returned to the UK in 2016 when his name came up after he was caught shoplifting.

The Romanian was deported again in November 2016, but returned to the country via Holyhead two weeks later.

He was deported again, but had previously been removed from the UK twice, in March 2017 and April 2018.

He was found at an address in Chapeltown in November 2019 and sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

Marin then proposed to the woman in the UK last September before he was arrested at his address in Beeston in November.

He claimed he returned to the country in August last year via Dover and got a job.

The prosecutor added: “Beginning in 2015, he made a concerted effort to enter the UK through various ports in Ireland and Northern Ireland.”
