Vladimir Putin’s armed forces launched another missile strike on Ukraine on the last day of the year, triggering an air alert across the country.
On Saturday, air raid sirens sounded in all regions of Ukraine, and local authorities warned of the danger of rocket attacks and urged citizens to take shelter, Reuters reports.
Ten explosions rang out in the capital Kyiv against the background of an air raid signal, an eyewitness told Reuters.
The governor of Kyiv region, which includes the capital, warned the population shortly before the attack and said that the region’s air defenses had targeted missiles.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko confirmed that explosions were heard in the city in a Telegram post.
What the Kyiv journalist says
Oliver Carroll, The Economist’s Ukraine correspondent, reported on what was happening in Kyiv in a series of tweets:
“Information about the wave of rockets that allegedly entered Kyiv’s airspace.
Air defense is very noisy now.
Even more powerful explosions in Kyiv – air defense system operates Air defense system has been operating almost non-stop for the last five minutes in Kyiv.
I don’t “think” there has been any impact so far, but this is just the first wave of missiles. And other cities are not so lucky.
Other explosions in the Kyiv region. By now there were probably a dozen of them. It looks more like anti-missile systems than strikes, although you can’t be sure.’
It is reported that at least one missile escaped the defenses of Kyiv. https://t.co/WHd0F14ZR9 pic.twitter.com/ESVGON9dtl
