He believes that the preliminary data give a realistic picture of the situation of Hungarians in Romania.

“We are more than a million people, and we cannot talk about a decrease of about 250 thousand, because almost 2.5 million citizens have not declared their nationality, and among them the proportion of Hungarians is, of course, the same as in the case of those who declared his nationality. nationality, so the law of large numbers also applies here. It should be given the necessary conditions for self-care, including an institutional framework to preserve its identity,” he said.

“I don’t think that, based on the previous data, we should be pessimistic or that we have reasons to celebrate, I think that we should look at our situation realistically and build a future for over a million people on that basis. lives in Transylvania,” said the president of the UDMR.

He emphasized that it is also worth studying the age pyramid of the population, as it is obvious that the entire population is aging, and this obviously also applies to the Hungarian community in Romania.

He recalled that the reason for launching the UDMR of its family policy was that annual statistics had already proven the need for a long-term state policy that would improve demographic indicators, promote the birth of the population, and help young families raise children. consolidate financial position.

Kelemen Gunor thanked the Hungarians in Romania who proudly declared their Hungarian identity, as well as everyone who organized the census or helped in any way to conduct it.
