About a hundred Internet terminals of the Starlink network are active in Iran, the head of SpaceX, Elon Musk, said on Monday, as quoted by AFP.

In September, the American billionaire pledged to roll out the Starlink satellite network in Iran as Iranian authorities increasingly restrict access to the Internet.

“Soon 100 Starlink terminals live in Iran,” Musk tweeted on Monday.

Starlink has a network of more than 2,000 small satellites in low Earth orbit that help provide Internet access. The ground terminals are then connected to routers that allow you to create Wi-Fi and therefore access the Internet.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, SpaceX has placed thousands of terminals there, which allow to ensure the security of the Internet connection. Currently, almost 25,000 terminals have been installed in the country.

Demonstrations have rocked Iran since the death in custody on September 16 of a young Iranian Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, 22, who was arrested for wearing “inappropriate clothing” against the strict Islamic dress code for women. Since then, hundreds of people have been killed, thousands arrested, and two 23-year-old boys hanged.

Iranian authorities have since restricted access to Instagram and WhatsApp — until this fall the only social networks still available — and the VPNs Iranians used to access banned sites. (Agerpress)
